This Cross….

These crosses were passed out at yesterday’s Kamehameha Middle School chapel service. I was unable to participate due to an urgent 3rd grade project. I asked a KMS student if it were still possible to get one. Her eyes opened wide as she reached for her backpack. She explained to me that these crosses were passed out to the students as they stood in line. There was, in her words, a “gothic” looking student who tossed her cross onto the floor. She quickly picked it up and put it in her backpack. This cross is now the most precious keepsake that I own. Thanks Misty….

KES Easter Chapel Service

Kamehameha Elementary School held its Easter Chapel Service this past Monday. I was asked to take part in an Easter drama. Wayne played the role of Barabbas, Jay was Peter, and Sheryl played Mary Magdalene. I was cast in the role of Thomas.

What was most memorable for me was actually the worship music portion of the service. Being on stage, I was fortunate to have had the “best seat in the house.” Seeing the faces of the students during the songs gave me “chicken skin.”

Sunday School Lesson Gone Awry….

I teach a class of 3rd & 4th graders at Children’s Church. Today’s lesson was about helping others. We played a game, read bible verses, and performed skits in small groups. For the last activity, each student had to come up with a family member whom he/she would help this week. Students wrote names of family members on band-aids and wore them on their arms and legs. The band-aid served as a symbol and a reminder.

One student had the bright idea of putting on the band-aid first, then writing the name after. This student also chose to wear his band-aid on his forehead. He asked his cousin to “write the name on his head.” Not fully understanding his instructions, she began to write “Mommy” an inch above the band-aid on his forehead with a Sharpie.

Ha’ena Beach Story….

This is beautiful Ha’ena Beach on the island of Kaua’i. This photo was taken about a week ago at our department’s goal-planning retreat.

Now what could possibly be wrong with this picture? Well, if you look closely at the left side of the photo, you can spot a bunch of us playing touch football. Six middle-aged NFL wannabes playing football is “what’s wrong with this picture.”

Casualties included a pulled hamstring, a lost wedding ring, sore muscles, and an embarrassing video clip that may one day find its way onto YouTube.

The “Test”

Went to the middle school campus today to be interviewed by two 8th graders for a math project. This happened during the 7th grade lunch period. I saw a whole bunch of former students in the hallway. Unfortunately, I was confronted with the dreaded “Do you remember my name?” test.

Now those of you who know me are well aware that I have a pretty poor memory….especially with names. And those of you who are teachers are also aware that it absolutely crushes a student when you forget them. Being caught off guard, my brain froze for a nanosecond.

….but only for a nanosecond! Somehow, I miraculously rattled off her first AND last name, AND her favorite food. Her jaw dropped. Seeing that I was “on a roll,” I continued to ask if there were anything else that she wanted to know about herself….

Good job by me.
